My weight loss with HCLF

I started tracking my weight in Cronometer on Dec. 30, 2014. I weighed 139.5 pounds. This is when I officially started eating high carb low fat. I had researched the HCLF vegan lifestyle before and was ready to give it a solid try with the start of the new year. It’s worth mentioning that this was nearly seven years after I went vegan.

I improved my diet slowly

I started HCLF by following a blend of Starch Solution and RawTil4. I ate fruit whenever I felt like it and ate starches like rice, pasta, and potatoes whenever I felt like it. I drank sugary coffee drinks daily. I ate lots of calories (3500-4000 on most days) because I was training for my first full marathon later that year.

My last weight entry on Cronometer was April 20, 2015. I weighed 145.5 pounds. I gained a few pounds since the end of December and I’m pretty sure salty foods were to blame. I still ate out at that time, my favourites being vegan burritos or pizza. While vegan and low in fat, these meals were always incredibly salty. Any amount of extra salt in your diet leads to dehydration, water retention, and bloating, which causes weight to fluctuate. That being said I still feel that I was eating too many calories even though I was training for a marathon.

I stopped tracking my weight after this because I didn’t see the point. I was happier and less stressed not weighing myself because then I couldn’t focus on a number and wouldn’t have any reason to feel negatively about myself. Instead, I started focusing on how well I felt. This is a much better way to gauge health and wellness in my opinion.

HCLF worked for me

Focusing on carbohydrates and keeping my fats to a minimum gave me all the energy I needed to be super active while living in California. I walked everywhere with the goal of walking 8-9 miles per day. I didn’t do this every day but did spend most days walking for hours as I ran errands. I kept this up for the rest of the year leading up to my move to Scotland. I did feel much leaner than I did earlier in the year, so I no doubt lost some fat.

I’m not sure how much I weighed when I moved to Scotland at the end of 2015, but I’m guessing it was between 135-140 pounds. For the first few months in Scotland, I fell off the HCLF wagon because I started eating out more and indulging in fatty foods.

Then I met my boyfriend Kuba in Feb. 2016 and started cleaning up my diet straight away. I went back to eating HCLF but this time, I only ate fruits, steamed veggies, and potatoes.

I left Scotland at the end of May and started this 6-month euro trip. I maintained this clean diet for the most part with the addition of rice, pasta, and an occasional meal out as I travelled through Europe. Three weeks ago while I was in Paris, I decided to go fully raw and started eating only fruit and some veggies. (I don’t eat any overt fats like nuts, avocados, or oil.)

I explain these changes in my diet in greater detail in My Diet is Simple.

How much weight did I lose?

I had a feeling I lost quite a bit of weight recently and was surprised to find out I’ve lost 22 pounds! My current weight as of Aug. 28 is 123.5 pounds. So from April 2015 (the last record of my weight in Cronometer) to Aug. 2016, I lost 22 pounds in 16 months.

And as of Feb. 2018, I’ve lost 29 pounds. Check out my most recent weight loss video here:

This weight loss didn’t happen overnight but it’s noteworthy to me because it was effortless. I never restricted calories and ate the foods I wanted to eat. I was moving toward a healthier way of living little by little. Losing weight was never a goal of mine but I’m pleased with the results.

Did it take a while for your weight loss to start after going HCLF? I’ve been eating HCLF for two months and unfortunately haven’t lost any weight yet!
